What Does “A Nest of Ants” Mean?

“Nest” is one of the more literal collective nouns on this site, referring directly to the physical structure ants build and live in rather than any behavior or symbolism. Ant nests range from simple soil mounds to elaborate multi-chambered underground cities with dedicated nurseries, food stores, and waste areas, some extending many feet below the surface and lasting for decades.

Unlike “colony,” which describes the biological unit of ants sharing a queen, “nest” more often refers to the physical location itself, and by extension, everyone living inside it. A single colony can also maintain multiple connected nests spread across a territory, linked by scent trails.

Example: “We accidentally disturbed a nest of ants while setting up the tent.”
